Attempting to get rid of the grass around the tree so that I could put mulch there instead, I put grass barrier around tree with cardboard overlapping it self in the same trench. Filled in the trench. Then wetted the cardboard and folded it in flat to the middle.

We got our first chip drop today! So I could finally put some mulch on the cardboard to kill the grass underneath.

2022 July 23

Removed mulch and cardboard because the soil became anaerobic. The mulch was too thick and the cardboard never dried out between irrigations (I get flood irrigation). I had added even more mulch.

2022 August 15

My next attempt to kill the grass and nut sedge was to use landscape fabric and a minimal amount of mulch, but the nut sedge pushed right through the fabric. Nutsedge shoots are stiff and have a sharp point before they emerge.
