Sun Protection

Many plants benefit from shelter from the sun when they are young, but can handle the harsh Arizona sun once they have become established

Plant Near a House

Planting within 2 feet of the north or east sides of a house provides protection from the afternoon sun which is the harshest time of the day.

Plant Near Larger Trees

Plant just under the drip line on the east side of a larger tree.

Shade Cloth

Shade cloth from big box stores is usually a very high shade percentage (90-100%) and are not appropriate for growing most plants.

30% shade cloth is appropriate for most plants that need some protection to get started the first couple of years.

50% shade cloth is appropriate for Avocado and Loquat their first few summers and for container grown plants
