Mango (variety: Alfonso)

2019 April 9

I purchased this mango tree for $55 from Shamus O’Leary’s Tropicals. Planted in the front yard 10 feet from the front porch with a west exposure.

2019 April 17

Shamus said to use the following to lower the soil PH level:

  • flood irrigation
  • 12 to 18 inches of mulch
  • Tiger CR90 sulfur (1 table spoon per square foot 3-4 times per year)

Droopy Branches. I asked Shamus about mango habit and pruning. He said that most varieties should be upright and that trees can be cut back as much as you want during the hot part of the year when they are putting out new growth.

2022 August 15

Fertilized with 8 cups of Tony’s Magic Mix.

2022 August 29

Applied 2 teaspoons of iron chelate.

2022 September 11

Applied 1⅝ oz of iron chelate (same type as 2022 August 29) which was several table spoons.

I asked Tony Sarah about this tree today too. This was his input after seeing the pictures above.

The tree appears to be slightly iron deficient and exposing the root flare around the base of the tree will help the tree against disease and aid in nutrient uptake.

The pH of the soil is what affects this the most so adding some sulfur at a couple of pounds in the spring yearly will aid in lowering the pH along with applying quality compost to the top of the soil as well. Use an organic fertilizer monthly from the time the nighttime temperatures start staying above 55 degrees through September should also aid in the long term health of the tree.

Overall the tree looks good.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any more questions.

Have a blessed day.

Tony

2022 September 18

Foliar fed iron chelate at a rate of 0.7g iron per gallon of water (1.5 tsp of 0.11% iron chelate mixed in a quart of water).

2022 October 6

Foliar fed 2.3g of 13% manganese chelate in 1 quart of water at 6:30a (sunrise)

2022 October 10

Foliar fed Greenlife’s foliar feed mixed 1 tablespoon per gallon plus a little bit of Soil Fertility Accelerator at 6:15am. I also applied SFA to the soil and watered it in.

2023 May 15

Looks like the Manganese deficiency from last fall is cleared up, but now its showing zinc deficiency symptoms.

2023 June 8

New growth looks healthier now. The tree has become unbalanced because it took frost damage only on the side away from the house.

2023 June 11

Applied 14lb of 90% agricultural sulfur covering a 10ft diameter circle around the plant.

2023 November 9

2024 March 3

I cut off all the branches that were growing down.

2024 July 11

I have been having branches suddenly die all summer. This might be an ambrosia beetle infestation.
