Texas Persimmon from seed

2022 September 18

I cut notches out of the bottom of a plastic cup, filled the cup with a wet vermiculite/perlite media mixed 1:1, set the cup in 1/4 inch of water so that it wouldn’t dry out, and put 25 Texas Persimmon seeds 1cm deep in the media. The whole thing is set on my kitchen table where the temperatures range from 68F to 80F.

I got the seeds from ebay user mcdermottdomains for $10.99 + $4.70 shipping. The description on ebay said it was 15 seeds but there were actually 25 in the package that I received.

I put the cup and tray of water on a heat mat with a thermostat set to turn on if the cup temperature dropped to 74F.

The vermiculite had developed mold on the top . I was dumping it out expecting to find a bunch of ungerminated seeds. But there was one that had germinated! I planted that one out in the yard and put the rest in a wet paper towel in a ziplock bag and back on the heat pad.

I gave up on the rest of the seeds and tossed them. They had started to rot.
