I ordered 2 Valle Negra fig cuttings along with 2 other varieties from F-Bennett on figbid.com.

The cuttings arrived. I sterilized some vermiculite by heating it to 300°F. I disinfected them in hydrogen peroxide: 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with 2 cups of tap water. I dipped the cuttings in dip’n grow rooting hormone diluted 15x. I wrapped the top of the cuttings with plastic wrap (I didn’t have parafilm on hand). I put vermiculite in 4 inch wide bags and stuck one cutting in each bag and sealed them with rubber bands. I put the finished bags in a dark closet.

First sign of a root.

One of these had developed a white mold under the plastic wrap that smelled like coconut. I soaked that end in hydrogen peroxide for a few minutes before potting to try and kill the mold. The other cutting looked like it was starting to rot so I cut the darkened part off.

None of these cuttings made it.
