I bought a bare root banana plant at the CRFG fall plant sale from Doug Jones. It was labeled with Vietnamese as the variety. It sat in the hot car for probably too long. I planted it when I got home. No special treatment. Just a hole big enough for the trunk, back filled native soil and watered it in. I put a wheelbarrow of mulch around the plant too.

2023 May 7

I thought this plant had died. The top died back to the ground by spring, but now there is a new sprout.

I put about 8 inches more of mulch around the plant yesterday. Put 6.5 oz of a cheap synthetic 10-10-10 fertilizer around this on top of the mulch.

New growth might be looking better. Also, the moringa shading this plant is getting bigger and providing better shade coverage.

Seemed to do pretty well this winter with no protection besides the wall of the house about 3 feet away. We got down to at least 24F farther away from the house.
