Lychee (litchi chinensis)

The lychee needs to be protected from frost until it is well established (about 3 years). Mature trees are much less sensitive and can survive temperatures as low as 26 degrees F for short periods of time.R

Trees may require protected from wind. And shade may be important in hot dry weather. Maybe 30% shade until 3ft tall and wide.[1,2]

Lychee leaves need only 1/2 of sun intensity during summer to grow well, so some shading should be good. Lychee flowers don’t set fruits well under shade so low shading or no shading during flowering. Lychee drop less fruits when shading 20 or 25 days after fruit set, can’t remember. – Seanny

The lychee has a high water demand that must be met. Therefore, since the lychee has a very shallow root system, surface mulches should be used in hot, dry conditions. To encourage fruiting, water should be withheld 6 to 8 weeks before flower set; however, in hot, dry conditions, water may have to be judiciously applied. Too much water after fruit set can cause the fruit to be aborted. Therefore, watering needs to be increased gradually after fruit set.R

Too much nitrogen and the tree may not flower. Alternate bearing is typical. – simon_grow
