White Sapote from seed

I bought 3 Youghan’s Gold white sapote seeds from achetadomestica‘s sale for $2.50 each +shipping.

When they arrived, I removed the shell from the seeds and put them with a moist paper towel in a ziplock bag on a heat mat set to 77F.

One seed had developed a lot of mold and was rotting. The other two were germinating. I put the two good seeds in the ground outside covered by an inch or so of dried grass to keep in the moisture. I put up some shade cloth so that they would have some protection from the sun if/when they sprout.

These never made it out of the soil. They would die back as soon as they tried to. Not sure if they were too dry or too hot or too much sun or what.
