Paul from CRFG let me put some air layers on a guava tree of his that has a high quality fruit. He got the plant about 4 years ago as a tissue culture from a CRFG meeting. The variety is unknown. I made two air layers. I used Dip’n Grow diluted for hard wood cuttings applied with a paint brush on the lower branch. I didn’t use any hormone on the upper branch.

Looks like the branches with layers put out some flower buds. I didn’t notice any anywhere else on the plant.

2022 October 29
The lower branch has visible root development. I didn’t see any on the upper branch.

2022 December 10
The upper branch has a root now. The lower branch has more root growth.

I took the lower branch today and put it in a 6 inch pot in the front yard where it will be covered by a frost cloth and under a heat lamp at night.

I removed the upper air layer from the tree and put it in a pot. It already had a fruit on it but I cut it off along with the leafs (not shown) to conserve energy.

The CRFG treasurer told me that the club had purchased Pink Barbie, Peruvian White, and Pink Tikal guava varieties the year that Paul took his plant home so this is probably one of those. I don’t know yet what color the flesh is.

The lower air layer died a while ago. I don’t know if I watered it too much or not enough
The upper air layer has been doing well. Some how I haven’t forgotten to water it. I planted it in the front yard today in a hole that was just bigger than the 6 inch pot it was in. I mixed biochar in the back fill and watered it in with some vitamin B1 and SFA added to the water.

This plant is doing well in the ground. It recently pushed out new growth and doesn’t have any sun burn.

2023 August 31
Still looking good.

2023 November 20
I put a string of 25 C9 incandescent lights on a thermostat set to 45F around the tree and covered it with frost cloth. I also tied a branch to the stake so that it is vertical to develop the structure I want.

2024 March 3
I’m already air layering my air layer.
